From the Principal
Ms Peggy Mahy
Here we are, already at the end of Week 3, and great learning is underway despite the draining effects of extreme heat. Meanwhile the impact of the pandemic has meant that we have had to be agile and responsive, especially around excursions and gatherings, whilst using our common sense and understanding of our own context. I thank all students, teachers, support staff and our families for their support through these challenging weeks.
Whilst some events have had to be postponed, many are continuing. Co-curricular activities are underway with the Years 7-12 Inter-house Swimming Carnival on Wednesday 23rd February, House Captains and staff have been pumping up student enthusiasm. The Years 3-6 Inter-house Swimming Carnival is on Friday 4th March with both events at Aqua Jetty in Warnbro. At this stage parents/guardians can attend but you will need to spectate from the designated area – please bring masks in case social distancing is not possible.
Vale Anna
On Wednesday afternoon this week, many from the Tranby College Community had the honour of attending the funeral of former staff member, Anna Jermolajew. A sad occasion but one that paid fitting tribute to her talents and spirit. We offer our thanks for having known Anna and continue to reflect on her impact on us and offer our condolences to friends and family.
Our Growing School
As indicated previously, the College is experiencing increased demand for places and a decision was made to add a third Year 5 class last week. Although less than ideal to redistribute students, class size pressure, our commitment to personalised delivery and the increasing number of students unable to enter the College, meant that we took that opportunity to create smaller classes, working collaboratively with three awesome teachers.
Top Trends of 2022
Last week, several of the College staff leaders and I explored social forecasting advice from demographic group, McCrindle. Their ‘Top Trends for 2022’ revealed a changing landscape of conditions for workers and individuals, not the least is the crucial importance of:
- relationships,
- minding meaning and purpose in work and or study,
- aligning one’s values with your workplace/school, and
- having a balanced lifestyle.
The changing digital landscape was also worth noting, where the ‘metaverse’ reflects a lived online experience where interactive platforms intersect with:
- real time communication,
- e-Commerce, and
- ‘actual’ living and socialising.
Probably the biggest take away for me, was hearing that the population in the ‘East’ of Australia is recalibrating ‘post-covid’, and how their priorities are shifting to reposition and champion new approaches to work, social life, and education, looking to work more from home and online but not exclusively. Please see the trends infographic in this link.

From the Deputy Principal
Mrs Emily Goforth
Undeniably, the COVID-19 pandemic has had a serious impact on the mental health of many people. As a result, people can feel anxious, stressed, and concerned over what the coming months will bring, negatively affecting how people interact with others and the activities they once enjoyed.
We must all take the time to acknowledge the pandemic’s continuing impact on our lives and implement strategies to ensure we remain as mentally and physically healthy as possible.
At Tranby, we have implemented the following measures to try and strengthen the mental health and wellbeing of our students:
- Implemented a Pre-primary – Year 12 Social and Emotional Wellbeing Program – ‘The Resilience Project’.
- Retaining events and co-curricular activities in line with Government regulations to facilitate physical activity and mental engagement.
- Incorporating high-frequency cleaning, in addition to the requirements stipulated by the State Government.
- Procurement of air purifiers to be located in areas as required.
- Adjusted formats for assemblies and Chapel services to ensure the continuation of these essential pillars.
However, all of these things do not necessarily take away from the anxiety experienced. Some other strategies that may assist in handling feelings of anxiety in our children are:
- Access high-quality sources of information about COVID-19. Feelings of fear and panic can increase significantly when rumours and sensationalised media coverage are continually consumed.
- Remaining connected to friends and family via phone or video calls if in-person catch-ups are not possible.
- Model calm responses for your children. They absorb and often mirror our reactions to the world. Remaining calm and having thoughtful conversations with your children will assist them to feel calm too.
- Eat well. A nutritious diet will help our bodies feel better.
- Development of routines. Routines help navigate the day and ensure we make time to do the things we enjoy.
- Engage in your interests and hobbies as much as you can.
There are plenty of support services available should the need arise, including:
- Kids helpline (24/7) – 1800 551 800 www.kidshelpline.com.au
- Beyond Blue (24/7) – 1300 224 636 www.beyondblue.org.au
- ReachOut – https://au.reachout.com
- Headspace – www.headspace.org.au
As a College, we are here to help support our students, staff and community through the trials that COVID-19 will present. More information will be distributed over the coming weeks in relation to the ongoing dynamic response of the College in relation to COVID-19.
As always, please do not hesitate to contact your child’s classroom teacher or mentor should you have any concerns in relation to their mental or physical health.

From the Deputy Head of Junior School
Mr Ben Viviers
Our children have shown incredible resilience during the past two years with frequent lockdowns, social isolation, limited access to their after-school activities and remote learning.
With an ever-changing landscape of learning how to live and cope with COVID-19, as well as navigating growing up, children are increasingly facing tougher issues. Thus, we must keep focusing on addressing the importance of mental health in our classrooms to equip students with the skills necessary to build resilience as a life skill. Educating all students from a young age to practise the key pillars of resilience; gratitude, empathy and mindfulness should help our children to maintain that self-awareness throughout their lives.
Commencing next week, we are pleased to be introducing The Resilience Project’s online wellbeing curriculum in our classrooms. The Resilience Project delivers emotionally engaging programs and provides evidence-based, practical strategies to build resilience.
The Digital Program consists of online presentations and lessons for students and a video series for our parent and carer community. Commencing Term 2, I will be communicating via SEQTA Engage, sharing the Parent and Carer Program with you. The videos are approximately 5-10 minutes long, introducing you to activities that will show how these strategies can support our children’s learning and development, and also support you as parents and carers.
I look forward to sharing the video series with you as this program is an important part of our school’s effort to look after the mental health of our community.
Please keep a look out for the initial letter with additional information and initiatives on how we will be modelling this program in the Junior School.

Cadets
Our Emergency Services Cadets had an amazing time at XLR8 last Monday. They pushed themselves to their absolute limits of fitness and overcame some mental challenges along the way. They scrambled through mud, scaled high walls and dove into muddy puddles. We are so very proud of every Cadet that attended, and loved seeing their big beaming smiles.
We welcome our new Cadets, who demonstrated fabulous teamwork and determination qualities, as well as our new Cadet Instructors; Claire Hartstonge, Nicholas Mariotti and Carla Booth.
This week our Cadets participated in various team games, Get to Know You Bingo, Magic Turtles, Tarp Folding (floor is lava) and Matchstick Challenge. It was great to see all Cadets participating in such a positive way within their House groups.

Junior School Sport
Years 3-6 Swimming Trials
On Friday 11th February students completed their swimming trials in the lead up to the Inter-house Swimming Carnival, which will be held on Friday 4th March at Aqua Jetty. Students trialled in freestyle, backstroke and breaststroke and will have the opportunity to sign-up for butterfly. Mrs Barber was so proud of our Junior School students for getting in the pool and giving it a go. We wish our swimmers the best of luck for the upcoming Inter-house Swimming Carnival.
