The Tranby Way

Earlier this week, our dedicated staff came together to explore the concept of a common language, with a particular focus on the development and refinement of the term “The Tranby Way.” This initiative is more than just a set of words, it is a framework for quickly articulating and reinforcing the positive behaviours and attitudes we wish to see in our students and colleagues. For those of you that have been part of the community for a while, you will know that this is not a new terminology. However, as often is the case as time moves on, it is important to revisit and reinvigorate meaning.

“The Tranby Way” encapsulates the core values and expectations that define our College culture. It is about creating an environment where respect, responsibility, and excellence are not just encouraged but are the norm. By adopting “The Tranby Way” as part of our common language, we aim to provide clear and consistent messaging that guides our interactions and decision-making processes.

A shared language across the College, from Childcare to Year 12, is important for a number of reasons. A shared language reduces misunderstandings and ensures that everyone is on the same page. Whether it’s in the classroom, during meetings, or in casual interactions, a common language fosters clarity and mutual understanding. When we all use the same terms and concepts, we build a stronger sense of community. “The Tranby Way” helps unify our efforts, making it easier for new students and staff to integrate and feel a part of our College family. Consistently using “The Tranby Way” allows us to quickly and effectively acknowledge and reinforce positive behaviours. This recognition not only boosts individual morale but also sets a standard for others to follow.

Our professional learning session was just the beginning. In the coming weeks and months, we will continue to refine “The Tranby Way” and reintegrate this into aspects of our College life with staff, parents and students alike. Together, we can make “The Tranby Way” a powerful tool for positive change and growth.

I want to thank our staff for their enthusiasm and commitment in this important endeavour. Your dedication to improving our College experience is inspiring. To our students and parents, your support and engagement is equally vital as we work together to build a community that embodies the best of what we can be.

Embracing the Olympic Spirit at Tranby College

As the excitement builds for the Paris Olympics and Paralympics, it’s an opportune time to reflect on how the values and vision of these global events align with our own at Tranby College. The Olympics and Paralympics celebrate not only the pinnacle of athletic achievement but also the spirit of teamwork, perseverance, and inclusivity—values that resonate deeply with our mission.

Tranby College strives to inspire and empower every student to identify and realise their hopes and dreams. This vision mirrors the Olympic spirit of pushing beyond limits and achieving personal excellence. Our core values of respect, integrity, service, commitment, and collaboration are foundational to both our community and the ethos of the Olympic Games.

A shining example

A shining example of how these values manifest in real life is our very own alumnus, Shaun Norris, from the Class of 2002, who has represented Australia in wheelchair basketball at the Paralympics. Shaun was part of the team that won a silver medal in Beijing 2008 and a gold medal in London 2012. His journey from Tranby to the global stage epitomises the dedication and resilience we aim to instil in all our students. His achievements remind us that with hard work, a supportive community, and a commitment to one’s goals, remarkable feats are possible.

The Olympics also highlight the importance of diversity and inclusion, celebrating athletes from all backgrounds and abilities. At Tranby, we foster an inclusive environment where every student is encouraged to participate, grow, and succeed, reflecting the Paralympic values of determination and equality.

As we cheer for the athletes in Paris, let’s also celebrate our collective efforts at Tranby to cultivate an environment where dreams are nurtured and every student is empowered to reach their full potential. Together, we can achieve greatness.

Welcome back to Term 3! We hope you all had a restful and enjoyable three-week break and are ready for another exciting and productive term ahead.

This term promises to be packed with activities and important events. Firstly, our Year 10 students will begin their 2025 Course Selection process. This is a significant step in their academic journey, and we encourage all Year 10 students to carefully consider their options and seek guidance from their teachers and advisors.

One of the highlights of Term 3 is the annual Inter-house Athletics Carnival, which will be held on Thursday 8 August. This event is open to all students from Years 7 to 12 and is a fantastic opportunity to showcase your athletic talents, support your peers, and enjoy a day of friendly competition. Remember to bring your school spirit and cheer on your House teams!

Year 9 students have an exciting adventure ahead with the ELP trip to Dwellingup from the 12 – 14 August. This excursion is a wonderful chance to develop leadership skills, bond with classmates, and experience the great outdoors. We wish all participants a safe and memorable trip.

As we start this term, a special note to our Year 12 students: This is your final full term of secondary schooling. We hope you are feeling focused and motivated as you prepare for your upcoming exams and final assessments. Remember, your hard work and dedication will pay off, and we are here to support you every step of the way.

Let’s make Term 3 a fantastic and successful term for everyone. We are excited to see all the amazing achievements and progress our students will make.

Best wishes for the term ahead!

Year 12 Retreat – The Final Camp

Last week the Year 12 cohort participated in their last Tranby Camp at Point Walter in Perth. They were blessed with wonderful winter weather and enjoyed a wide range of activities.

The activities included archery and golf, testing precision skills, zip lines for adrenaline and Yoga and letter writing for reflection time.

The evenings were filled with good humour and camaraderie. Evening activities included a very competitive quiz night and a beautiful meal at La Sosta in Fremantle.

It was wonderful to see students supporting each other throughout the activities and they will all have taken home precious memories of their last school camp.

What a start to the term we have had!

Students from Pre-primary to Year 6 started the term by kicking up their heels in their Dancesport lessons. Debbie from Dancezone has been running the program at Tranby for over 20 years and it is wonderful that she continues to run these fun, lively and interactive lessons.

Students in Years 5 and 6 and staff have been busily preparing for the Junior School production of, ‘Disney’s My Son Pinocchio JR’, which will be held at Koorliny Arts Centre next week. Students will perform their first show at the matinee on Thursday 1 August followed by the evening performances on Thursday 1 August and Friday 2 August. Costuming, makeup, hairstyles and rehearsals are in full swing and the excitement in the air is palpable. I am sure you join me in wishing our cast and crew the very best for what is sure to be a very memorable experience.

In addition to the production, students and staff have been practising hard for their performance in the ‘One Big Voice’ choir to be held in the evening of Thursday 22 August at RAC Arena. This will be an amazing opportunity for all involved as schools from all over Perth come together to join in song.

With the variety of class excursions, incursions and activities planned, we are set for a very busy and productive Term 3. Hold on to your hats everyone!

Deputy Head of Junior School

Mr Ben Viviers

The mid-year break is fast approaching; it is a moment to both reflect on the successes of the term and enjoy some well-deserved relaxation. Students eagerly await the release of their Progress Reports, which celebrate their achievements this semester and offer invaluable insights into their academic and personal development. I encourage parents to attend the upcoming 3-way Conferences with their children to discuss how we can collaborate to best support your child’s learning journey and identify key areas to focus on for greater success in Semester 2.

Junior School Production – My Son Pinocchio JR

Rehearsals are well underway, and the recent arrival of costumes has added an extra spark to the production! Friday, 14th June, has been designated as a full rehearsal day at school, and I eagerly anticipate witnessing the progress they have made. It is not long now until the release of ticket sales, please keep an eye out on all our social media platforms for this highly anticipated information. Initially, tickets will be available for parents of the performers and crew, with sales opening to the wider Tranby College community shortly after. Make sure to secure your tickets promptly!

Parents of Pre-primary to Year 2 students, please note, that students will attend the Matinee Performance during the school day on Thursday, 1st August, however, more information will be provided via Ms Brooke Steele to all relevant parties.

Kindergarten Nature Connection ‘Bush School’

Mrs Taylor and I recently visited the Kindergarten Bush School. Thankfully, we brought umbrellas, a decision we quickly appreciated. Upon arrival, our students were well-prepared for the conditions, each wearing very colourful gumboots, Tranby rain jackets, and most importantly a smile. As an outdoor enthusiast myself, I was reminded of the invaluable nature of such experiences. While the focus is on students learning about their environment, let us not overlook the benefits of reconnecting with nature for both young and old alike. We had the opportunity to speak with the organisers, who provided feedback regarding our participation in the program. They were impressed with the organisation of our staff and the careful planning that ensured the program ran smoothly. They even likened our standard to that of international schools deeply embedded in such practices for many years. This is a tremendous compliment, and our Kindergarten Team should take immense pride in their efforts.

In closing, as we fully embrace the colder weather, it is crucial for parents to ensure their children are well-prepared for the changing conditions, especially before and after school. Yesterday’s experience at pickup time highlighted the challenges firsthand for many of us. Rainy weather can make these times particularly challenging. While we all aim for efficiency during pickups, it is important to remind students not to run across roads. Please take a moment to reinforce road safety with our little ones. Additionally, I would also like to emphasise the importance of adhering to speed limits when entering the premises to ensure the safety of all pedestrians. Let us work together to make our school environment as safe as possible for everyone.

Have a wonderful weekend.

Year 11 and 12 Tranby Dance Company

Last week, the Year 11 and 12 Tranby Dance Company students spent two days filming their 2024 dance video.

The dancers spent time working in the wonderful Photofinity studios and then moved onto the Fremantle Ports and the WA Maritime Museum with professional video creator (and outstanding dancer) Logan Ringshaw and his company Kilter Vision. It was incredible making the links between our Tranby namesake ship, our current theme of ‘Inclusion’ and the collective goal to strive for excellence.

A huge thanks to the staff at Photofinity, Fremantle Port Authority and WA Maritime Museum for their support of our student experiences.

Cadetssss!

This has been an exciting and busy first semester for our Tranby Emergency Services Cadet Corps!

We have learnt the importance of early and safe intervention in emergency situations with an interactive incursion from our local Fire Department and a talk with the Search and Rescue members in Baldivis.

All our Cadets are beginning to understand their responsibilities as a member of this prestigious group and have been working together to support one and other in leadership roles.

Another exciting event was the wildlife incurssss-ion where Paul Kenyon, AKA the Snake Whisperer, brought in some of the slithery creatures for a safety discussion and opportunity to face our fears. Many of the Cadets leapt at the opportunity to handle a snake, while others leapt away from the opportunity as quickly and safely as possible; not quite ready to face their fear.

Finally, our Year 7 and 8 students participated in the Dare Adventure camp that had them working together to overcome many challenges; including convincing their teachers that abseiling and climbing trees aren’t as scary as it seems! Over the course of the three-day camp we participated in Archery Tag, Disc Golf, Ziplining, Abseiling, Team Building, and last, but most certainly not least, a visit to feed and dote on resident guard-goat, Billy and his mates!

Thank you to all our wonderful Emergency Services Cadet Corps students for your enthusiastic and passionate participation this semester, we can’t wait to have you back for the second half of 2024!

School Sport WA Primary Schools Golf Championship

Last term, we had three Year 6 students represent Tranby College at the annual School Sport WA Primary Schools Golf Championship. The event was held at Melville Glades Golf Club with well over 15 schools in attendance. This competition run by Golf WA provides young golfers with an introduction to competitive golf. Students are required to be skilled in the game of golf, which includes knowing the rules, etiquette, how to score and must be able to make their own way around a course.

Our students produced some fantastic results, both individually and as a team, but most importantly they all had a wonderful experience. Overall, the team tied for 7th place out of a total of 18 teams, which is an amazing achievement. Congratulations to Chloe, Lachlan and Oliver, the College is extremely proud of your efforts.

  • Chloe Carrabin – Individual Score = 66
  • Lachlan Caudwell – Individual Score = 65
  • Oliver Downham – Individual Score = 57

Combined Tranby College Team Score = 120

These students will continue to harness their skills in the game of golf in our Year 4-6 Golf Program next term!
